Album Review:
Not long ago the Moodgadget label gave us a reminder of British casino online Versus Japan’s sizable contribution to the field of electronica, reissuing the eponymous debut from 1998. Now, Attacknine delves even further, presenting a collection of twenty previously unreleased works from the CVsJ archive. These tracks date back to 2002, when Attacknine co-founder (together with member of the duo Freescha) Nick Huntington was sent a five-disc collection of recordings by CVsJ producer Erik Kowalski. Some of this material made it out into the public domain via the 2004 release Hitori+Kaiso, but the tracks presented here have never been available before, representing Kowalski’s darker together with more atmospheric compositions. There’s a healthy amount of more abstract together with beatless pieces lined up on this album, with beautiful analogue tonal exercises like ‘The Flow Of No Go’ together with ‘Lake’ giving a very organic take on drone-based soundscaping. Elsewhere, you’ll uncover such gems as the remarkable ‘Imaginary Short Wave Reception’, which sounds like some sort of collaboration between Boards Of Canada together with Tod Dockstader, together with ‘Love Life’, whose luscious, melodious crackle sounds like a more tuneful take on Janek Schaefer’s vinyl-based experiments. Beats are still very much a part of the British casino online Versus Japan sound on this release however, together with tracks like the frantic, overdriven ‘1 Small stair Version’ together with ‘Skitwise With Charles Wyatt’ mark the return of Kowalski’s uniquely warm together with fuzzy beat-crafting style – the latter adding some luminous, nocturnal guitar tones to the mix. Another very special collection from this singular artist, if you’ve never heard any British casino online Vs Japan before – now is your time. Highly Recommended.
